The credential program is based on Linux, a vendor-neutral open source operating system introduced in the year 1991. To qualify for the LPI Linux Essentials certification, an individual must pass 010-150 exam (1.5 version). The objectives of this test include:

- How to choose an OS
- Understanding more about computer hardware
- Data storage, network configuration, and basics required by a computer on a LAN

Linux 010-150 exam has 40 questions, and the candidates are given 60 minutes to complete the test. The exam consists of multiple-choice and fill-in-the-blank questions. The exam has no prerequisites and costs $120. On a scale of 200-800 points, a candidate must attain a score of at least 500 points in order to pass the exam and qualify for the certification. Exams that are scheduled via Pearson Vue use psychometric principles. This means that the exam is set in such a way that it is able to measure the candidate’s skills, knowledge, and mental abilities. Statistical analyses are also conducted to evaluate how reliable Linux exams are. This ensures that the tests are of high quality and up to date with changing technological trends.
